Celebrating Women in the Green Industry

Ben Collinsworth

Did you know March 8th was International Women’s Day?

Around the world, people celebrated women and the amazing social, economic, cultural and political achievements they have made and continue to make every day. They also recognized the strong influence and impact women have on the world around us.

When it comes to the world of landscaping, women also make an impressive impact. In the U.S., the first third of the 20th century saw the rise of women in the fields of landscaping. Today, they are thriving in various areas of the business.

At Native Land Design, we celebrate our amazing female team members. Here is a glimpse inside what some of them do and what they enjoy most about their work making your landscapes better places to work, live and play every day.

Nallely Jones, account manager and office administrator, Mission, Texas

NallelyWhat do you do at Native Land Design? I manage a crew that takes care of several properties. Also, in the office I create proposals based on suggestions for the clients and their needs. Alongside my teammate, we create the weekly schedules and approve times for the crews.

What do you enjoy most about your job? The knowledge I constantly gain. You can never fully know the business. Also, I enjoy the customer interaction, answering their questions, concerns and being available to tend to their needs.

Mariela Aguilar, landscape designer and manager of seasonal color department, Houston, Texas

MarielaWhat do you do at Native Land Design? I design and propose landscape enhancements for our clients’ properties as well as bid on new construction and installation projects. I also work with a team of very talented, hardworking women in our color department where I manage the quality and maintenance of our color beds to keep our clients’ color displays prolific and healthy.

What do you enjoy most about your job? As a horticulturist, working in the green industry is already a dream come true. But what I really enjoy is the fact that I get to be creative every day. I get a lot of satisfaction out of designing outdoors paces and contributing to enhancing nature in urban settings. A landscape plays a huge role in how people feel in a space. Imagine removing all green from a property; it would never feel or look the same. I know what we do at Native Land Design makes a difference and provides enormous value and that makes me enjoy what I do even more.

Deanna Rodriguez, porter

DeannaWhat do you do at Native Land Design? I care for all of the pots and help out in the maintenance shop. I help service machines and trucks, as well as sharpen blades.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love to interact with people and enjoy just how uniquely everyone is in their own way. Some have stories or some just are so sweet. And then you have some who are just so funny; they look for me to just tell me a joke or brighten my day. It’s so great to be surrounded by people who are professional and care about their jobs. I enjoy working at Native Land Design and look forward to growing with the company and helping it prosper.

Sandra Leija, operations/account manager/marketing, Houston, Texas

I have the great opportunity to surround myself with people who challenge me and help me give my best every day. Overseeing our McAllen operations, I get to evaluate the quality of work our crews do and find solutions if needed. I love nature and all its beauty; how awesome it is to contribute to and help maintain our green industry!

Becky Dillard, office manager, Austin, Texas

BeckyWhat do you do at Native Land Design? I’m an office manager and have been with Native Land Design for 11½ years.
